USA vs Brazil 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup. Of course, fans of both the U.S. women and Brazil won't be particularly happy with how the group stages played out, giving the two pre-tournament implied semifinalists an extremely difficult quarterfinal matchup, but at least they should be treated to some exciting football. Brazil and the United States will square off in the marquee quarterfinal match of the 2011 Women's World Cup on July 10. Brazil qualified for the quarterfinals by winning all three games in Group D. The Samba Queens scored seven goals in those matches (tied with Germany and France for the most in the tournament) and conceded none. The United States only needed a draw against Sweden in Group C to win the group and instead lost 2-1 in a lazy performance. Unfortunately, that meant playing a red-hot Brazil squad.

The United States last faced Brazil in a knockout round in the 2007 World Cup. Starting goalkeeper Hope Solo was benched in net in favor of veteran Briana Scurry, who had not played in months. The result was an embarrassing 4-0 rout. The United States got the better of Brazil in the 2008 Olympics, defeating it 1-0 in the "Gold Medal Match" in extra time. Solo was crucial to that victory and has been playing very well in this World Cup.


Brazil has gotten two goals apiece in this tournament from Cristiane, Marta and Rosana. Erika also scored a wonderful goal against Equatorial Guinea last match. The USA can't be too keen on just trying to stop Marta or they risk getting scored on by one of its other capable goal scorers. The United States has had six different goals-scorers score its six goals in the tournament. Most important, in the last match against Sweden, Abby Wambach finally ended her scoring drought.

Brazil has played the best soccer of any team in the tournament so far. However, it has looked this good before and have never been able to win the World Cup. The United States has never finished worse than third place.

I think the Americans will bounce back from the loss against Sweden and play much better against Brazil. Finishing scoring opportunities will be crucial. Nobody has been able to deny the USA from getting enough shots to win. If the USA can hold Brazil scoreless in the first half, it will have a good chance to pull out the victory.

Sweden vs Australia Live Stream

Sweden vs Australia 2011. The forward firepower of Sweden and Australia faces off in the quarterfinals of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, with both teams gunning for a date with Japan. A quarterfinal match few would have predicted will take place July 10 when Sweden takes on Australia. Before the tournament, the United States was expected to win Group C and Norway to take the second spot in Group D. As neither one of those scenarios panned out, we get Sweden vs. Australia.

Both teams seem to have been improving with each step in group play. They also were involved in important matches for their last group fixtures. For Sweden, it fought for the top of Group C. Australia needed to do well to even advance out of group.

Sweden tops United States, riding high

Giving the United States it first loss ever in group play at a Women's World Cup, Sweden knocked down the No.1-ranked team by a score of 2-1. The key to the match for Sweden was being able to take advantage of chances presented.

Their first goal came as a result of a penalty kick from an ill-advised foul by American defender Amy LePeilbet. Lisa Dahlkvist was able to put it away for Sweden. Its second score off another foul, and a free kick for the Swedes. Rachael Buehler was whistled about 25 yards out, and Nilla Fischer attempted the free kick. With the ball going to her left, United States goalkeeper Hope Solo committed, but the ball was deflected off LePeilbet at the wall, sending it shooting into the opposite side of the net.

Australia fights for spot in quarters, Matildas come through

Needing at least a draw to advance, Australia pulled out a 2-1 victory over Norway to secure its spot in the quarterfinals. The match didn't go well for the Matildas at first, when a defensive error allowed Norway to go up 1-nil.

Australia wasn't ready to step aside, or even slow down. Just one minute later it found the equalizer. The match stayed even until the 87th minute, when Kyah Simon got the second of her brace to bring it home for the Matildas.

A good match between two sides with momentum

Neither Sweden or Australia stands out as an obvious pick one over the other, although Sweden will be slightly favored by virtue of the match against United States. Personally, I don't see that being enough. I think Australia will surprise, and the Matilidas will find themselves on to the semifinals. England vs France FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 Quarter Final. England and France kick off the quarterfinals of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, as playmakers Kelly Smith and Louisa Necib will put their skills on display.
The organizers of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup have seriously lucked out with the way their quarterfinal matches fell. The two most intriguing quarterfinal matchups are the first and last games of the set, while the hosts Germany play in the middle. England and France kick off the quarterfinals on Saturday in a match that's hard to predict, as both teams have had some serious ups and downs.

France and England are similar in talent, but both teams had their last match work out in different ways. England put in a stellar performance against a Japan team that previously looked unstoppable, while France fell to hosts Germany. Though France was able to finally expose the Germany back line as weak on set pieces, their own back line struggled against the hosts.

England aren't quite as great of a team in the air as Germany or the United States, but they're no slouches in that department. Still, most of the play will run through Kelly Smith on the ground, while Ellen White will try to continue to impose her physical skills on the France defense.

While England have the raw talent and they certainly have the form, they could potentially run into the same problem Canada did where they aren't quite on the same technical level as France in the midfield. The good news for England is that their back line is much stronger, much more experienced, and much more composed than that of Canada. Three Lionesses captain Faye White will have to keep track of France striker Marie-Laure Delie, whose impeccable goal scoring record and finishing instincts could be the x-factor for France.

The players to watch in this one are probably Louisa Necib and Kelly Smith, the best technical players and primary playmakers for their respective teams. Neither player has been on absolute top form so far in the World Cup, but if either steps up their game and plays to the best of their abilities, it should make a massive difference in the match.
