After a brief trip to the North Group the TV cameras focus their attention on the South Group again on Thursday and the subject of their focus is the London derby at Lords between Middlesex and Surrey. These two don’t have a rivalry like Lancashire and Yorkshire but there is a friendly rivalry there and Middlesex, who are out of the competition in terms of qualifying for the next stage, would love nothing more than to upset Surrey’s push for a quarter final spot. Surrey begin the evening in 6th spot but depending on results elsewhere could move into the top 4 with a win.
Middlesex know they are out of the competition and they’ve been resting some key players like Andrew Strauss, Chris Rogers, Dawid Malan and Corey Collymore ready for the resumption of the Championship, which they are nicely placed in. Jamie Dalrymple returns to the Panthers squad tonight but it will be a side which includes many of Middlesex’s promising youngsters which takes to the field in this match.
Surrey have to be a lot more serious about things and they’ll be glad to have overseas signing Yasir Arafat back after a short injury. He’ll join Dirk Nannes and Chris Tremlett in a pretty formidable pace attack. Mark Ramprakash is being rested in this competition but in Roy, Davies, Hamilton-Brown, Maynard and de Bruyn Surrey have a very strong top 5. A slight criticism is that they don’t have much to back them up.
I expect Surrey to win this match but I’m not a player at 2’s on. Instead I’ll head to the side market and the 6’s line in particular. At 8.5 it looks a touch high with a strong Surrey bowling attack, neither side having the strongest batting line up’s and indifferent weather not to mention bigger boundaries at Lords. Perhaps this line is a fallout of the Whitgift School match but the square at Lords is probably bigger than the outfield there so I’ll take the unders here.
